On Sunday 30th April, Walthamstow Deaf Club took
a group of 43 Deaf and Sign Language users to the Tower of London, ourtesy
of Awards for All |

The Tower provided a marvellous BSL Interpreter, Lynne Johnson (who also works in Waltham Forest as Interpreter for the Sensory Loss Department of LBWF) who stayed with the group all day. We had a Yeoman Warder guided tour of the History of the Tower of London but, best of all, the group were given special and rare access to handle and try on the replica crown jewels (worth over £35,000)! |

Pictured (right) is Simon Harvey, of Antlers Hill Chingford, who became King Simon for the day, fully robed, crowned and holding the "official" sepulchre! Liz Denton, Education/Access Officer of HM Tower of London (who is currently learning BSL herself) talked the group through the history and procedure of the coronation and then gave the group a private tour of the Royal Armories Museum. Deaf Club members then rounded off the day by a private "Duck Tour" of London, a sightseeing tour by road and river in an amphibious vehicle originally used in World War II during the D-Day landings. A truly memorable day! |
